AAT (ART) Appeal & Review Hub

Your one‑stop portal for everything related to Administrative Appeals Tribunal (now Administrative Review Tribunal, ART) merits‑review of Australian migration and citizenship decisions.

Why this hub?

Official sites tell you what forms to lodge. We add the how, why and what‑actually‑works—drawn from real cases we run every week.

What the Tribunal Actually Does

The Tribunal conducts an independent merits review of Department decisions. It looks at the facts afresh and can substitute a new decision. From July 2024 the body is re‑branding to ART, but processes and lodgement deadlines remain the same.

Key facts (2024-25)

For visa appeals, you must lodge within 21 days, pay a A$ 3,396 application fee in 2025, and can expect a median wait of roughly 288 days. In 2024, 44 % of migration‑visa refusal cases were set aside or remitted in applicants’ favour.

For citizenship appeals, the window is slightly longer at 28 days, the 2025 fee is A$ 1,895, and the 50‑percentile processing time sits at about 184 days. The 2024 success rate for citizenship matters was 28 %.

Can I stay in Australia during the appeal?

Yes—most onshore applicants hold a Bridging A or C visa. Check our bridging‑visa guides for work rights.

Yes. Members are not DHA staff and can overturn refusals. 44 % of migration visa refusal cases were set aside in 2024.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

You’ll need to explore judicial review or offshore re‑application—see /aat/judicial-review-after-aat.
