  • Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa
    A permanent residence visa for aged care professionals sponsored by an eligible Australian employer, often used after 2-3 years on a TSS or 494 visa.
  • Labour Agreement Stream – Some aged care providers have access to a Labour Agreement that enables sponsorship of lower-level care roles or those with more flexible English or qualification standards.

Requirements for Aged Care Sponsorship Visas

  • Each visa subclass has distinct eligibility criteria. Generally, to apply for a sponsorship visa for aged care workers in Australia, you must:

    • Hold a relevant aged care qualification (e.g. Certificate III in Individual Support)
    • Demonstrate recent experience in the aged care or community care industry
    • Have competent English language skills (IELTS or equivalent)
    • Be nominated by an approved Australian employer
    Pass health, character, and skills checksts

Additionally, depending on the visa, your occupation must be on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or on a labour agreement.

Sponsorship Process for Employers

Australian aged care providers who wish to sponsor foreign workers must:

  1. Become a Standard Business Sponsor or enter a Labour Agreement with the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Nominate a position that is genuine and on the eligible occupation list.
  3. Demonstrate efforts to hire locally before turning to overseas talent.
  4. Pay the required fees and levies (e.g. SAF levy).

For 482 and 494 visa sponsorships, the nomination and visa application must be lodged either simultaneously or in close sequence.
