AFP Police Check

What Is an AFP Police Check?

When applying for an Australian visa—whether it’s a partner visa, student visa, skilled visa, or citizenship—you must actively demonstrate that you are of good character. To do this, one of the key documents required is an AFP (Australian Federal Police) National Police Check.

Importantly, the Department of Home Affairs relies on this certificate to assess whether you meet the character requirements under Public Interest Criterion 4001 or PIC 4020. Without it, or if you submit the wrong code, your application may face significant delays or even refusal.

Use AFP Code 33 for Immigration Purposes

When requesting an AFP police check for visa or immigration purposes, be sure to select Code 33 – “Immigration / Citizenship”. This is crucial, as it ensures your National Police Certificate is valid for processing by the Department of Home Affairs. Otherwise, using the wrong code can render your check invalid, leading to serious delays or even refusal.

Unfortunately, many applicants mistakenly choose the wrong purpose or submit a state police check (such as one from NSW Police), which the Department does not accept. To avoid this, always request the AFP check using the correct code from the start.

When Is an AFP Police Check Required?

The AFP check is commonly required for the following:

  • Partner visa applications (e.g. 820, 309, 100, 801)
  • Prospective marriage visas (Subclass 300)
  • Citizenship applications
  • Skilled visas or employer-sponsored visas
  • Character assessments for health waivers or PIC 4020 responses

The Department may also request updated checks during processing if your case is delayed.
