NSW Nomination NIV

Overview

New South Wales (NSW) offers a state nomination to help exceptional people apply for Australia’s National Innovation visa (NIV, subclass 858). NSW targets established and emerging leaders who can create jobs and drive productivity in key sectors. Profiles include global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, athletes and creatives. <Updated: August 2025. Sources: NSW Government and the Australian Department of Home Affairs>

Why seek NSW nomination?

  • NSW nomination gives Priority 2 consideration with Home Affairs.
  • A rigorous, expert-led review; may include endorsement from recognised leaders in your field.
  • NSW positions itself as your first strategic partner, helping you build local networks and opportunities.

Note: Only Home Affairs can grant the visa. NSW nomination does not guarantee an invitation or visa grant.

NSW nomination pathways

NSW offers five distinct pathways. Review each one and match your evidence to the criteria:

  • Researchers & Academics
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Innovative Investors
  • Sports Professionals
  • Creative Professional

How to get started (step-by-step)

  1. Check your pathway criteria — Read NSW’s pathway criteria and ensure you can evidence every claim.
  2. Submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) — One active ROI at a time, valid for 6 months, and no edits after submission. Take your time and submit when ready.
  3. If invited, apply for nomination — If your ROI is shortlisted, NSW emails a link to lodge the full nomination. You’ll have 21 days to submit, with documents proving all claims in your ROI.

What NSW asks in the ROI

You’ll answer questions about: personal details, any representative, and professional details (role, organisation, salary/financials, achievements, skills). Then pathway-specific sections ask for:

  • Researchers & Academics: grants, qualifications (incl. rankings), publications/citations, keynote talks, IP, other exceptional achievements.
  • Entrepreneurs: business idea & innovation, market/commercialisation plan, 3–5 year financials, track record, funding, accelerator/hub involvement, IP, awards.
  • Innovative Investors: deal experience (amounts, stages, role), outcomes (growth, exits), community contribution (mentoring/boards), commercialisation activity, recognition.
  • Sports Professionals: elite results or coaching record, rankings/representation, awards, planned contribution to NSW sport.
  • Creative Professionals: major works/exhibitions/performances, awards/critical acclaim, international venues/festivals, sector impact and NSW plans. You’ll also outline Why NSW & your future impact, any job offer, and any NSW Government agency engagement to date.

After NSW approves your nomination

If approved, NSW will sign Form 1000 and provide a letter of recommendation for your EOI to Home Affairs. (Home Affairs decides invitations and visa outcomes.)

Fees

NSW charges no fee for the ROI or the nomination application. Visa application charges are paid to Home Affairs if invited to apply for the visa.
