TSS Visa

Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) – Formerly TSS Visa

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa has been officially replaced by the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) as of 7 December 2024. This change is part of the Australian Government’s broader migration reform to tackle national skill shortages with a more streamlined and flexible pathway.

Under this revised visa framework, skilled professionals sponsored by approved employers can live and work in Australia temporarily, with some streams providing pathways to permanent residency.

Consequently, if you were considering the TSS 482 visa, you should now explore the SID visa. Importantly, the new subclass 482 structure retains many core elements while improving processing speed and workforce alignment.

Streams Under the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa

The new subclass 482 visa—now operating as the SID visa—continues to support employer-sponsored migration through several key streams:

  • Core Skills Pathway:
For skilled workers in high-demand occupations that align with Australia’s workforce needs.
  • Specialist Skills Pathway:
For professionals with niche expertise or experience in advanced sectors.
  • Labour Agreement Stream:
For workers sponsored under a specific labour agreement with the government.

While the stream names and structure may evolve, the aim remains: to ensure employers have access to skilled labour when no suitable Australian worker is available.

Eligibility for the SID Visa (Subclass 482)

Eligibility remains similar to the TSS visa with additional focus on job market relevance:

  1. Employer Sponsorship – You must be nominated by an approved sponsor.
  2. Occupation List – Your occupation must appear on the approved Skills in Demand list.
  3. Skills & Experience – Typically, 1+ years of relevant work experience is required.
  4. English Proficiency – Meet the language requirements for your stream.
  5. Health and Character – Undergo standard health and police checks.

Additionally, some sectors may require a skills assessment depending on the occupation.

SID Visa Processing Time

Processing times for the SID visa vary by stream:

  • Core Skills Pathway: 1–3 months
  • Specialist Skills Pathway: 2–4 months
  • Labour Agreement Stream: 2–6 months

Given the new system’s emphasis on efficiency, faster decisions are expected for priority roles.

Benefits of the New Skills in Demand Visa

The SID visa provides substantial advantages over the old TSS system:

  • Increased flexibility for employers
  • Faster processing in key sectors
  • Clearer transition to permanent residency pathways
  • Enhanced protections for workers
  • Family members may work or study in Australia

Furthermore, the reform aims to address long-term labour gaps across health, tech, engineering, and regional industries.
