If you are an Indian citizen living in Singapore and considering Australia, the best visa pathway will depend on your current situation, your long-term goals, and whether you are looking at travel, work, study, or permanent migration.

For many applicants, the question is not simply which visa exists. The real question is which pathway makes sense from where you are now.

What the Data Shows

Recent Department of Home Affairs data shows that Indian nationals continue to use multiple Australian visa pathways. In 2024–25, Australia granted 302,758 Visitor visas, 48,536 Student visas, 26,875 Temporary Resident (Skilled Employment) visas, and 1,000 Working Holiday Maker visas to Indian nationals. India also ranked first for primary Temporary Resident (Skilled Employment) grants in Australia’s broader migration trends for 2024–25, with 12,360 grants.

Visa Options

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

Suitable for short-term travel, family visits, or business visits. The Visitor visa is the main general visit pathway.

Skilled Migration (189, 190, 491)

Suitable for applicants with a qualifying occupation, points, and the right skills profile.

Employer-Sponsored Visas (482, 186, 494)

Often the most practical pathway for experienced professionals with a job offer in Australia. In Australia’s 2024–25 migration trends, India was the top citizenship for primary Temporary Resident (Skilled Employment) grants.

Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Suitable for applicants planning to study in Australia, often with a longer-term migration strategy in mind.

Work and Holiday (Subclass 462)

A newer option for eligible young Indian passport holders. India officially joined the Work and Holiday program on 16 September 2024, and the Department’s India country profile shows 1,000 Working Holiday Maker grants in 2024–25. India is also now part of the ballot-based pre-application process for this visa.

What Many Applicants Overlook

Many applicants start by assuming skilled migration will be the obvious pathway.

Sometimes it is. But in practice:

  • points can be higher than expected
  • your occupation may not align as neatly as you think
  • an employer-sponsored pathway may be faster and more practical
  • a student or short-term pathway may only make sense if it supports a longer-term plan

A clear strategy early on can save time, money, and unnecessary delay.
