Bridging Visa D

What Is a Bridging Visa D?

A Bridging Visa D (BVD – Subclass 041) is a short-term, emergency visa that allows you to remain lawfully in Australia for a few days while you:

  • Prepare and lodge a new visa application, or
  • Make arrangements to leave the country.

It is generally granted when your visa has expired, or if you tried to apply for a visa but it was not validly lodged.

When Is a BVD Granted?

You may be eligible for a Bridging Visa D if you:

  • Attempted to lodge a visa application but it was incomplete or invalid
  • Have become unlawful because your previous visa expired
  • Need time to arrange travel out of Australia
  • Intend to apply for a Bridging Visa E or another substantive visa

How Long Does a BVD Last?

A Bridging Visa D is usually valid for no more than 5 days. It is not designed for long-term stay but rather for very short-term legalisation of your visa status while you act quickly.

During this period, you must either:

  • Fix the issue and lodge a valid application, or
  • Depart Australia, or
  • Apply for another appropriate visa such as Bridging Visa E

Where Do You Apply?

A BVD is typically applied for in person at a Department of Home Affairs office. It is not available online and is usually granted on the same day, depending on your situation.
