Form 1006

If you need to leave Australia temporarily and return while you are on a bridging visa, you may need to lodge Form 1006 – Application for a Bridging visa B. A Bridging Visa B (BVB) is commonly used to request travel permission so you can depart and re-enter Australia lawfully during an ongoing visa process.

Because travel on a bridging visa can affect your lawful status, return eligibility, and timing, it’s important to confirm whether you meet the BVB requirements and to prepare a clear travel explanation with supporting documents.

What is Form 1006?

Form 1006 is the Department of Home Affairs form titled “Application for a Bridging visa B – To seek permission to travel.”

Key requirements for a Bridging Visa B (BVB)

The form explains that BVB grant requirements include:

  • You must be the holder of a Bridging Visa A or B
  • You must have substantial reasons for wishing to leave and re-enter Australia
  • Your return to Australia must not be contrary to the public interest

How to apply (ImmiAccount vs upload)

  • You may be eligible to apply via ImmiAccount (particularly if your substantive visa was lodged in ImmiAccount).
  • If you cannot apply in ImmiAccount, the form instructs you to upload the completed Form 1006 via the Department’s online forms portal.

Validity, payment, and address

  • The application is not valid until you pay the visa application charge (VAC).
  • You must provide your residential address in Australia. If you do not, the application may be invalid, and a PO Box is not accepted as a residential address.
  • Payment is made electronically through ImmiAccount (“My Payments” / pre-pay paper service).
  • If circumstances change after lodgement, you must inform the Department.

.

Including family members

If members of your family unit also need to travel (and therefore need BVB), they must be included in the application (the form points applicants to Form 1496i for family unit guidance and indicates family members who want to travel must be included in Part E).

Common mistakes we see with Form 1006

  • Booking travel without confirming BVB grant (risk: leaving Australia can cause certain bridging visas to cease)
  • Weak or unclear explanation for “substantial reasons” to travel
  • Missing supporting documents (e.g., evidence of the reason for travel, dates, and return plans)
  • Residential address issues (missing address or using PO Box)
