1186 Visa Requirements – Your Guide to Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)

The 186 visa requirements are central to understanding your eligibility for the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS). Whether you’re applying under the Direct Entry stream or Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream, meeting the specific 186 visa requirement criteria is crucial for success. This permanent visa allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia, provided they are nominated by an approved employer.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the major requirements, pathways, and supporting documentation you need to lodge a strong application.

Overview: What Is the 186 Visa?

The Subclass 186 visa is a permanent employer-sponsored visa with three streams:

  • Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) – For 482 visa holders who’ve worked with the same employer for at least 2 years.
  • Direct Entry (DE) – For applicants with relevant skills and qualifications who are nominated for a permanent position.
  • Labour Agreement Stream – For those sponsored under a formal agreement between an employer and the Australian Government.

  • Pass health and character checks
