Skills in Demand (SID) Visa
Australia has introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa, replacing the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, to better address critical workforce needs. This new visa provides greater flexibility and opportunities for skilled workers while streamlining the application process. Here are the key features of the SID visa:
1. Visa Streams and Occupation Lists
The SID visa offers a three-tiered pathway system, tailored to meet Australia’s labour market demands: .
- Specialist Skills Pathway:
For roles with guaranteed annual earnings of AUD 135,000 or more, targeting highly specialised professionals. This pathway offers priority processing for fast approvals.
No specific occupation list; however, trades workers, machine operators, drivers, and labourers are excluded. - Core Skills Pathway:
Designed for occupations listed on the newly created Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), managed by Jobs and Skills Australia.
Examples of occupations include healthcare professionals, teachers, and IT specialists. - Essential Skills Pathway:
Focused on roles with earnings below AUD 73,150 that are deemed essential to Australia’s economy. Specific criteria for this stream are under review.
2. Earnings Thresholds
Each pathway under the SID visa has unique income requirements:
- Specialist Skills Pathway: Minimum annual earnings of AUD 135,000.
- Core Skills Pathway: Minimum annual earnings of AUD 73,150.
- Essential Skills Pathway: No fixed threshold yet, but targets essential, lower-paid roles.
These thresholds ensure the SID visa attracts both high-demand professionals and essential workers critical to Australia’s workforce.
3. Work Experience Requirements
The SID visa simplifies the experience requirements, making it more accessible:
- Reduced Requirement: Applicants only need one (1) year of relevant work experience, compared to the two years required under the previous TSS visa.
This change benefits skilled workers, including recent graduates who have gained professional experience.
