Subclass 482 Visa Conditions

Your 482 visa conditions are listed on your visa grant letter and in VEVO. Conditions can vary by case, but common conditions for primary 482 (SID) holders include 8607 (approved work only) and 8501 (maintain health insurance), and sometimes 8303 (not be disruptive).

Approved work only - Condition 8607

This is the most important condition for most 482 primary visa holders. In practical terms, it means:

1) You must work in the nominated occupation

You must only work in the occupation nominated for your most recently granted 482 visa. If you want to work in a different occupation, you usually need a new nomination and a new 482 visa before you can start in the new role.

2) You must work for the approved sponsor (with limited exceptions)

  • You must work for the business that nominated you.
  • If your sponsor is an Australian business, you may also be allowed to work for an associated entity (depending on the stream/grant details).
  • If you change employers, your new employer must get a nomination approved before you start work with them.

3) You must start work within 90 days

You must commence work within 90 days of:

  • arriving in Australia (if you were offshore at grant), or
  • visa grant (if you were onshore at grant).

4) If your employment ends: the 180 / 365 day rule

If your employment with the sponsor ends, you may stop working (or work outside the usual 8607 restrictions) for:

  • up to 180 days in a single period, and
  • up to 365 days total across your visa period.

These periods operate from 1 July 2024 under the updated condition settings.

5) Exempt occupations (limited)

Some occupations are “exempt” under a separate instrument, which can allow more flexible work arrangements (for example, certain roles may work for multiple employers in the same occupation). Exemptions are occupation-specific and should be checked before relying on them.

Maintain adequate health insurance - Condition 8501

This condition requires you to have and maintain adequate health insurance for your entire stay in Australia. This applies to many primary and secondary applicants. If your health cover lapses, it can create compliance issues.

Not be disruptive (may apply) - Condition 8303

Condition 8303 means you must not engage in disruptive activities or violence that threatens harm to the Australian community or a group within it. Not every 482 holder has 8303, but it may be imposed in some cases.

Licences, registration and membership (often linked to 8607)

If your nominated occupation requires a mandatory licence/registration/membership, you must:

  • hold it while performing the occupation, and
  • comply with its conditions.

If it’s mandatory and you don’t hold it, you must not work in that role. If the authorisation ends or is refused/cancelled/revoked, you should notify the Department as required.

Common “conditions” mistakes

  • Starting work for a new employer before a nomination is approved
  • Taking on duties that effectively shift you into a different occupation long-term
  • Letting health insurance lapse (8501)
  • Miscounting time after employment ends (the 180/365 day rule)
  • Assuming “associated entity” work is always allowed without checking your grant details
