English Requirements
Most applicants in the Core Skills or Specialist Skills stream must show minimum English by taking an approved test and meeting the required scores, unless an exemption applies. The rules are set out in LIN 25/082, which applies to applications made on or after 13 September 2025.
Labour Agreement stream: English requirements can be set by the labour agreement terms (so they may differ from the standard test scores).

You meet the 482 English requirement if you either:
LIN 25/082 lists these approved tests: CELPIP General, IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, LANGUAGECERT Academic, MET, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT.
For most applicants (non-exempt) in Core Skills or Specialist Skills, the minimum scores are:
Test validity: Your English test results must be within 3 years of the date you provide them with your 482 application. If your test provider allows it, you may re-sit just one component (e.g., Writing) to meet the minimum score—your final result can combine the scores from your original test date and the re-sit date.

For most applicants in the Core Skills or Specialist Skills stream, you must meet the minimum English scores in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, unless you qualify for an exemption.
The minimum PTE Academic scores are Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29, Speaking 24.
Generally, results must be within 3 years. In some cases, you may re-sit a single component if your provider allows it.
Common exemptions include certain passport holders (e.g., UK/USA/Canada/NZ/Ireland), applicants with 5 years of full-time study in English, and some licence/registration or intra-company transfer scenarios.
