482 English Requirements (SID Subclass 482)

Most applicants in the Core Skills or Specialist Skills stream must show minimum English by taking an approved test and meeting the required scores, unless an exemption applies. The rules are set out in LIN 25/082, which applies to applications made on or after 13 September 2025.

Labour Agreement stream: English requirements can be set by the labour agreement terms (so they may differ from the standard test scores).

What is the requirement?

You meet the 482 English requirement if you either:

qualify as an exempt applicant, or
take an approved English test and meet the required scores (valid within the relevant period).

Approved English tests (LIN 25/082)

LIN 25/082 lists these approved tests: CELPIP General, IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, LANGUAGECERT Academic, MET, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT.

Required English test scores for 482 (including PTE)

For most applicants (non-exempt) in Core Skills or Specialist Skills, the minimum scores are:

IELTS Academic / General: 5.0 in each component (L/R/W/S)
PTE Academic: Listening 33 / Reading 36 / Writing 29 / Speaking 24
OET: Listening 220 / Reading 240 / Writing 200 / Speaking 270
TOEFL iBT: Listening 8 / Reading 8 / Writing 9 / Speaking 14
CELPIP General: 5 in each component
LANGUAGECERT Academic: L 41 / R 44 / W 45 / S 54
MET: L 49 / R 47 / W 45 / S 38

Test validity: Your English test results must be within 3 years of the date you provide them with your 482 application. If your test provider allows it, you may re-sit just one component (e.g., Writing) to meet the minimum score—your final result can combine the scores from your original test date and the re-sit date.

482 English requirements exemptions

You’re an exempt applicant if you meet one of these:

Passport holder of Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, UK, or USA
Completed at least 5 years of full-time study (secondary or higher education) where teaching was in English
Nominated for work at a diplomatic/consular mission or Taiwan authorities office in Australia
The occupation requires licence/registration/membership, you hold it, and you had to meet an English level equivalent to or higher than the visa test requirement to obtain it
Intra-company transfer style scenario: employed by an established overseas business, nominated by that company/associated entity, and earning at least AUD 96,400
