482 Visa Occupation List (CSOL)

For the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482), the “occupation list” is set by a legislative instrument: Migration (Specification of Occupations—Subclass 482 Visa) Instrument 2024 (LIN 24/089). This instrument creates the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and explains when an occupation does or does not apply based on “applicable circumstances” (often described as caveats).

How the 482 occupation list works

Your occupation can be eligible only if:

  1. your nominated occupation is on the CSOL (for Core Skills stream), and
  2. your job’s actual tasks match the ANZSCO tasks for that occupation, and
  3. no applicable circumstance applies that excludes the occupation for your position.vv

What are “applicable circumstances” (caveats)?

LIN 24/089 includes an Applicable Circumstances List. If your role falls into one of those circumstances, the occupation may not apply, even if it appears on the CSOL.

Examples of circumstances include roles that are:

  • in a limited service restaurant (e.g., fast food/takeaway, limited service café)
  • in a business with low turnover or very small staff numbers (depending on the item)
  • not full-time (in some circumstances)
  • primarily low-skilled tasks or certain mass-production settingsv

Specialist Skills stream: exclusions can still apply

The instrument also says that if an applicable circumstance applies to the position, an occupation may not apply to a Specialist Skills stream nominee as well.

How to check your 482 occupation

  1. Identify your most accurate ANZSCO occupation based on your duties (not your job title).
  2. Confirm it appears on the CSOL for the stream you’re targeting.
  3. Check whether any applicable circumstances (caveats) apply to your position (industry type, business size, turnover, earnings, workplace setting, etc.).

Common “occupation list” mistakes we see

  • Picking an occupation based on job title instead of task alignment
  • Ignoring “applicable circumstances” that exclude the occupation for that role
  • Weak duty breakdown (no clear mapping to ANZSCO tasks)
  • Business context doesn’t support the level of the nominated occupation

Clear, practical answers to help you understand your options and next steps.

What is the 482 visa occupation list (CSOL)?

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) is the official list of occupations that can be used for Core Skills stream nominations (subject to caveats and task matching).

What are “caveats” or “applicable circumstances”?

These are rules that can exclude an occupation in certain situations (for example, depending on business type, role setting, turnover, staffing, or earnings).

Can an occupation be excluded even if it is on the CSOL?

Yes. If a caveat (applicable circumstance) applies to the position, the occupation may not apply, even if it appears on the CSOL.
