DAMA 482 Visa (SID Subclass 482)

A DAMA 482 visa is a Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) application lodged under a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA). DAMAs are regional labour agreements that help employers in approved regions sponsor overseas workers when they can’t fill roles locally.

In most DAMAs:

  • The employer must be endorsed under the region’s DAMA, and
  • The nomination and visa application are made under the Labour Agreement stream of the SID (482) visa.

DAMA 482 visa requirements

While each DAMA has its own rules and occupation list, a typical DAMA 482 case needs:

  • 1) A DAMA region and an eligible employer
The employer must operate in the designated area and hold the region’s endorsement requirements.
  • 2) An eligible occupation under that DAMA
Your occupation usually must appear on the DAMA’s occupation list (and any role-specific conditions must be met).
  • 3) A valid nomination and SID 482 visa application (Labour Agreement stream)
The SID (482) Labour Agreement stream applies where the employer has a labour agreement in effect (including DAMA arrangements).

What makes DAMA different? (concessions)

Many DAMAs offer concessions compared to standard employer-sponsored pathways. These can include concessions on occupation, English, salary/income, age, or experience—but only if the DAMA allows it for that occupation and visa pathway.

Concessions are DAMA-specific. You must follow the rules for the region and the occupation.

DAMA 482 process

A DAMA 482 visa is usually a multi-step employer process:

  1. DAMA endorsement / region steps (employer meets regional criteria)
  2. Nomination under the DAMA (role, duties, salary, conditions)
  3. 482 visa application (SID Labour Agreement stream)

482 DAMA visa processing time

Processing times vary and depend on the DAMA region steps, nomination quality, and the visa application evidence. Home Affairs generally points applicants to the processing time guide for the underlying visa program, and DAMA steps can add additional time depending on the region and case complexity.

What commonly slows DAMA 482 cases down:

  • occupation mismatch or weak duty alignment
  • incomplete employer evidence for DAMA endorsement
  • salary/conditions evidence gaps
  • missing documents at lodgement

Pathway to PR from a DAMA 482

Some DAMAs offer pathways to permanent options (often via employer nomination pathways), depending on the DAMA terms and occupation. The Home Affairs DAMA framework commonly links to visa programs including subclass 186 and subclass 494 in addition to subclass 482.
